Fremontadendron mexicanum
This is Fremontadendron mexicanum, a shrub in the cacao family found only in the border region. Only two populations of this species are known to remain: here near Cerro Solo, where there may be fewer than 20 individuals, and just north of the border at Otay Mountain, where a few hundred are found.

Although this is the only representative of this plant family found in northwest Baja California, and the population of this species is reduced to near extinction in Mexico, the plant is without protection under Mexican law.
