ASR Manual

Appendix I: Current ASR Rank and Rate Insignia

VERSION 4.50

Insignia and backgrounds created by Scott Lusby; uniforms designed and created by Ed Bell;.  Both acknowledge the instrumental help of the ASR Flag Council and Alan Martin in their respective developments.

Below are the official rank insignia for ASR, as they appear on the duty uniforms.  Other insignia can certainly be used, so long as tunic color and style, as well as rank pins, are the same as those authorized by ASR.

These new insignia reflect the proposed changes to the ASR specifications- in short, these specifications state that both Naval and Marine personnel use the same insignia for both officers and enlisted personnel, and that there be eight (8) recognized groups.

All insignia are shown in their actual size:

  • Yoke Insignia (Duty and Optional Jumpsuit)- 110 pixels x 35 pixels.

  • Dress Epaulettes- 125 pixels x 50 pixels.

  • Sleeve Stripes- 90 pixels x 40 pixels.

1a- Officers of the Star Fleet Navy Command, Engineering, Operations and Sciences groups

The insignia on the flag, senior/junior, and warrant officer's duty uniforms are found on the right-hand shoulder yoke, just above the breast.    The shoulder yoke itself is piped in one of the 8 group colors, and comes straight down from the neck (the graphics above show a tapered yoke, but this is a perspective issue; the yoke piping actually comes down straight).  The flag officer's uniform adds an extra strip of gold piping on the outside of the group-color piping.  All officer's uniforms consist of a black jacket with a high Prussian-style collar and loose-fitting black pants that go over black boots.

Rank is also determined by sleeve striping; since those stripes are of the same design and schemes as the current uniform sleeve striping, they will not be discussed here any further.

On the dress uniforms, the insignia for all officers is shown on a small shoulder epaulette in the officer's group/department color, bordered in either black (senior/junior and warrant) or gold (flag). Sleeve striping as outlined above completes the officer's dress uniform.

The optional officer's duty jumpsuit is black, with the shoulders colored to represent each department.

The insignia themselves, in this option, are made up of 8-pointed gold stars for the flag grades, and the conventional round solid-gold/hollowed-out pips system for the senior and junior officer grades.  They are shown on a new background, which shows the corner where the neck and breast piping meet just above the right breast or the shoulder epaulette.  The optional jumpsuit uses 'blacked out' insignia; the other uniforms use gold and silver insignia.  These insignia are shown below:

1c- Officers of the Star Fleet Marine Corps*

Aside from the standard duty and dress uniforms, Marines have the option of wearing a Battle Dress Uniform (BDU). The standard Marine BDU is a one-piece jumpsuit designed to fit underneath the 'smart armor' of the modern Marine (the armor will mimic the camouflage pattern of the BDU) that looks like the standard uniform, except that it is camouflaged and trimmed in black.  The insignia are a special low-reflection style, and is found on the right-hand yoke, just as the duty uniforms are.  Officer BDU's also have black cuff stripes to denote rank.

There is also no discernable difference- other than the actual insignia- between the BDU of a general officer and of other officers.

*- Since there can only be one ship's captain aboard Starfleet vessels, the traditional Terran Marine rank "Captain" has been replaced by the rank "Lieutenant-Major" to avoid the necessity of the courtesy rank of "Major" to such officers on modern naval vessels. Lieutenant-Major is still company grade, not field grade.

2a- Warrant Officers of the Star Fleet Navy Command, Engineering, Support and Sciences groups

Warrant officers wear the same uniform as senior and junior officers wear; however, their insignia system in this option is made up both solid silver and hollowed-out diamond-shaped pips.  Also, the rank of W-5 has been added to bring the system in line with current U.S. Naval practices.  Furthermore, the grades of W-1 to W-5 have been added to the Marine chain of command.

3a- Cadets of the Star Fleet Navy Command, Engineering, Support and Sciences groups

Students at Star Fleet Academy wear a similar uniform to the officers, except that it is gray, and it is a one-piece jumpsuit for convenience.  They are piped in the appropriate department color, and have both rectangular pips and black cuff stripes to denote year.

4a- Non-Commissioned Officers and Enlisted Personnel of the Star Fleet Navy

The enlisted officer's duty uniform, as shown above, is similar to the officer, except for a few distinct differences:

  • The enlisted uniform does not have a separate jacket and pants, but is instead a black, one-piece jumpsuit.

  • The shoulder yoke on the enlisted uniform is gray instead of black.

  • The rate insignia for enlisted personnel is not found on the yoke, like the officer grades are, but have been moved to the sleeves just below the shoulder.

Everything else about the enlisted uniform matches the officer's version.

The insignia below show the sleeve stripes just below the gray shoulder area, with the piping around the shoulder area denoting the department just as on an officer's uniform.
