DON’T EAT TOO MUCH RICE

The human body was never meant to consume rice! You see, our genes have hardly changed in more than 30,000 years. However, our food choices and lifestyle have changed dramatically. The caveman would hardly recognize our food or way of life.

Caveman food was never cooked as fire was not yet tamed. Thus, he ate only those foods that you can eat without treatment with or by fire. He ate fruits, vegetables, fish (sushi anyone?), eggs, nuts and meat. Yes, even meat. You can even eat meat raw if you were starving in the forest. You have the necessary enzymes to digest meat.

However, rice, like wheat and corn, cannot be eaten raw. It must be cooked. Even if you were starving i n the desert, you cannot eat rice in the raw form. This is because we do not have the system of enzymes to break rice down. You were never meant to eat rice. To make matters worse, you not only eat rice, but also make it the bulk of your food.

In some parts of Asia , rice forms up to 85% of the plate. Even if you take rice, keep it to a minimum. Remember, it is only for your tongue – not your body. Actually, rice and other grains like wheat and corn are actually worse than sugar. There are many reasons:

>>> Rice becomes sugar – lots of it.

This is a fact that no nutritionist can deny: rice is chemically no different from sugar. One bowl of cooked rice is the caloric equal of 10 teaspoons of sugar. This does not matter whether it is white, brown or herbal rice. Brown rice is richer in fibre, some B vitamins and minerals but it is still the caloric equal of 10 teaspoons of sugar. To get the same 10 teaspoons of sugar, you need to consume lots of kangkong – 10 bowls of it.

>>> Rice is digested to become sugar.

Rice cannot be digested before it is thoroughly cooked. However, when thoroughly cooked, it becomes sugar and spikes circulating blood sugar within half an hour – almost as quickly as it would if you took a sugar candy. Rice is very low in the “rainbow of anti-oxidants”

This complete anti-oxidant rainbow is necessary for the effective and safe utilization of sugar. Fruits come with a sugar called fructose. However, they are not empty calories as the fruit is packed with a whole host of other nutrients that help its proper assimilation and digestion.

>>> Rice has no fibre.

The fibre of the kangkong fills you up long before your blood sugar spikes. This is because the fibre bulks and fills up your stomach. Since white rice has no fibre, you end up eating lots of “calorie dense” food before you get filled up. Brown rice has more fibre but still the same amount of sugar.

>>> Rice is tasteless.

Sugar is sweet. There is only so much that you can eat at one sitting. How many teaspoons of sugar can you eat before you feel like throwing up? Could you imagine eating 10 teaspoons of sugar in one seating?

>>> Rice is always the main part of the meal.

While sugar may fill your dessert or sweeten your coffee, it will never be the main part of any meal. You could eat maybe two to three teaspoons of sugar at one meal. However, you could easily eat the equal value of two to three bowls (20 – 30 teaspoons) of sugar in one meal. I am always amused when I see someone eat sometimes five bowls of rice (equals 50 teaspoons of sugar) and then asks for tea tarik kurang manis! Are you a rice addict? Going rice-less may not be easy but you can go rice-less. Eating less rice could be lot easier than you think. Here are some strategies that you can pursue in your quest to eat less rice:

There is no real “built in” mechanism for us to prevent overeating of rice
How much kangkong can you eat? How much fried chicken can you eat? How much steamed fish can you eat? Think about that! In one seating, you cannot take lots of chicken, fish or cucumber, but you can take lots of rice. Eating rice causes you to eat more salt.

You tend to take more curry that has salt to help flavor rice. We also tend to consume more ketchup and soy sauce which are also rich in salt.

Eating rice causes you to drink less water. The more rice you eat, the less water you will drink as there is no mechanism to prevent the overeating of rice. Rice, wheat and corn come hidden in our daily food. As rice is tasteless, it tends to end up in other foods that substitute rice like rice flour, noodles and bread. We tend to eat the hidden forms which still get digested into sugar. Rice, even when cooked, is difficult to digest

Can’t eat raw rice? Try eating rice half cooked. Contrary to popular belief, rice is very difficult to digest. It is “heavy stuff”. If you have problems with digestion, try skipping rice for a few days. You will be amazed at how the problem will just go away.

Rice prevents the absorption of several vitamins and minerals. Rice when taken in bulk will reduce the absorption of vital nutrients like zinc, iron and the B vitamins.

Eat less rice – Cut your rice by half. Barry Sears, author of the Zone Diet, advises “eating rice like spice”.

>>> Instead, increase your fruits and vegetables.

>>> Take more lean meats and fish.

You can even take more eggs and nuts. Have “riceless” meals. Take no rice or wheat at say, breakfast. Go for eggs instead.

>>> Go on “riceless” days.

Go “western” once a week. Take no rice and breads for one day every week. That can’t be too difficult. Appreciate the richness of your food. Go for taste, colors and smells. Make eating a culinary delight. Enjoy your food in the original flavors.

>>> Avoid the salt shaker or ketchup.

You will automatically eat less rice. Eat your fruit dessert before your meals. The fibre rich fruits will “bulk up” in your stomach. Thus, you will eat less rice and more fruits.

  1. Is this your article? It has spread through viral emails.
I must say your writing style is not bad – however this article lacks a LOT of scientific backing. On occasion, it actually contradicts itself. I had a good laugh about some of the theories there.

    • This is not my article. My friend sent me this in my e-mail. I just find it interesting, that’s why I posted it here. This article really caught my interest because I also love eating rice, as in a lot.

  2. Nat, I didn’t write this article. My friend sent it in my e-mail. I find it interesting that’s why I shared it in here.

  3. Interesting, hmm i guess.. but people should be careful with what they read on the internet though. Its always good to have a good laugh once in a while. Thanks for sharing. Keep it up.

    • your a doctor thats why you want people to get sick..your a sicko who doesnt want to cure..better dr. batman share his knowledge for free..his not greedy..

  4. Seeing as rice tends to settle the stomach…I found this article baffling. Have you ever seen many Asians that are fat? I’ve also read that China has some of the healthiest diets…so how does this work when they eat a LOT of rice? I’m not limiting it to Asia but it WAS in the article (“85% blah blah”

    • Thanks for reading and commenting Leah. Just received it in my email and posted it here. No wonder, I received a lot of comments in this post. 🙂

  5. this makes alot of sense to me,thats why they say that after eating chinese you are hungry half an hour later because of the spike in blood sugar and then the crash..awesome article please let me know about more similar articles because i’am very interested in nutrition

    • Dan the reason you are hungry 30 minutes after eating Chinese food is because you are most likely consuming MSG, as we are in America and this is Americanized Chinese food. The Chinese diet is also not as healthy as the Japanese diet. Rice is NOT bad for you. This article is bull. White rice may be, but brown rice is one of the healthiest things you can eat. The Japanese diet has been proven to be one of the healthiest in the world. They are much, MUCH healthier than us over here in America, and they are a lot of the ones who eat the “85 percent rice” diet. They are the epitome of good health. You should all take a note from them and consume your brown rice…DAILY!!

  6. I cant eat rice in large quantities. I feel bloated and heavy after eating it. Living at the moment in Singapore, they look at me strange, when i ask for a meal without rice.

But, if i eat rice, i get 3 days consipation.

  7. RUBBISH.

Our CIVILIZATION was based on the domestication of rice. You’d be a f*cking caveman right now if rice hadn’t come along. Or dead. Or most likely not even born.

I’d say give thanks to the fact you have rice to eat every day.

Oh, and it wouldn’t be a meal without rice.

  8. This is my favorite web page and I believe everything they say. Read more from the web page.

The difference between brown rice and white rice is not just color! A whole grain of rice has several layers. Only the outermost layer, the hull, is removed to produce what we call brown rice. This process is the least damaging to the nutritional value of the rice and avoids the unnecessary loss of nutrients that occurs with further processing. If brown rice is further milled to remove the bran and most of the germ layer, the result is a whiter rice, but also a rice that has lost many more nutrients. At this point, however, the rice is still unpolished, and it takes polishing to produce the white rice we are used to seeing. Polishing removes the aleurone layer of the grain-a layer filled with health-supportive, essential fats. Because these fats, once exposed to air by the refining process, are highly susceptible to oxidation, this layer is removed to extend the shelf life of the product. The resulting white rice is simply a refined starch that is largely bereft of its original nutrients.

Our food ranking system qualified brown rice as an excellent source of manganese, and a good source of the minerals selenium and magnesium. The complete milling and polishing that converts brown rice into white rice destroys 67% of the vitamin B3, 80% of the vitamin B1, 90% of the vitamin B6, half of the manganese, half of the phosphorus, 60% of the iron, and all of the dietary fiber and essential fatty acids. By law in the United States, fully milled and polished white rice must be “enriched” with vitamins B1, B3, and iron. But the form of these nutrients when added back into the processed rice is not the same as in the original unprocessed version, and at least 11 lost nutrients are not replaced in any form even with rice “enrichment.”

  10. am like your blog Barry Sears…I don’t really like rice, but rice is one of our main meal…reading your blog helps me to understand what a mess I’m in…I will start to eat less rice and eventually I will be able to eat to stay away from it completely, reason for this…my mom died from diabetes and by right I have to take precaution, thank you for this blog, I believe I will be able to live a more healthy life in future.

  11. Having too much of anything is bad for you because you won’t have a balanced diet. RIce is actually very for you. Brown rice is a whole grain and a complex carbohydrate. You want complex carbs because they break down slower in your system so your blood sugars DON’T spike and so the carbs don’t get stored as fats in your body. Because they are more complex they have more sugar units not more sugar. Corn and other grains are usually processed and hidden in many foods along with wheats and soy beans. If you get them fresh they are perfectly healthy for you. Most white rice can be bad for your health though depending. It’s also called evolution and we are very different from when we were cavemen.

  12. I’m poor, I’ve been surviving the past couple weeks on white rice and corn bread. I don’t like the taste of rice, so i put sugar on it

  13. This is a very poor article. There are no references, which is not surprising because the information presented is incorrect. Open up any Tertiary level Nutrition book and see for yourself how full of shit this person is.

Rice is very good for people. It is meant to be cooked because cooking enhances rice nutrient absorption. It is a great base food from which to bulk other foods so that they digest properly.

Why do you think Asian people are healthier than the rest of us? maybe bar Italians because of all the olive oil in their cooking.

  14. I think in terms of sugar ,rice must have it but rice is become the world wide food-over here in west africa rice is a meal eating every sunday in atleast 92% of every home not minding any other day rice became meal. I eat rice alot,it is my number 1 meal

    None

  15. lol
    if not rice then what?

I stay alone and hate fast food. I cook my own food and rice is the best among others as it can be cooked easily n superfast in pressure cooker or rice maker. I make curry n vegitables n chicken n fish to go awesomely with rice.

You tell me, if not rice then what?
    If not rice then what?

  16. You’re wrong. Cave men had fire. Cave men cooked the vast majority of their foods.

Humans have been using fire since before we even evolved into humans. Raw foodism is bullshit.

I do agree that a “paleo diet” is the best one, but the food should be cooked. Rice is fine in small amounts, it’s not that bad compared to other grains.

  17. Hello, I think your blog might be having browser compatibility issues.
When I look at your blog site in Chrome, it looks fine but
when opening in Internet Explorer, it has some overlapping.
I just wanted to give you a quick heads up! Other then that, wonderful blog!
