Like most of the things there’s scope for some mistakes in currency printing as well. Rarely do mistakes happen in currency printing, but when they do, these notes simply can’t be handed over to public as it is. These notes though carry a lot of value to collectors are practically useless in the market and general public may simply want to get rid of it. These notes with mistakes thus are reprinted and made available to public and for easy identification a * symbol is added after the first three characters or prefix followed by the six digit serial number.

These notes were initially available only in small denominations of Rs. 10, 20 and 50, but now star marked notes with denominations of 100 are available.
