Get further acquainted with the sewing machine and basic tools of the trade. Learn how to work with different-weight fabrics and sew a boxed corner. Students will also learn about topstitching, reinforcement stitching, and how to use webbing to make bag handles. Apply these skills and more to make a lined canvas tote bag with coordinating handles.

Class Prerequisites: Intro to Basic Sewing Skills and/or EC sewing machine certification. 

Required Materials: A sewing machine and all materials will be provided.

About Beginner Sewing Level 1: these classes introduce new or less experienced sewists to beginning sewing information and resources with hands-on practice.

Beginner Sewing Level 1 classes introduce and practice the following skills:

  • cutting, measuring, and marking fabric
  • pressing with an iron

CCPL's Taneytown Branch will partner with Carroll County Public Schools and the US Department of Agriculture to provide free summer meals for kids and teens. Thanks to a Caring and Sharing Ministries sponsorship, adult lunches will also be provided at no charge. Adults may pick up a meal to go, but to comply with Federal regulations, children must eat at the library. There is no enrollment or cost; meals will be served from 12 PM until 1 PM. In addition to our computers and Play & Learn Center, we will feature many programs before and after lunch. Join us for food and fun on weekdays this summer.

Join us for another joint program between CCPL's Westminster Branch and Exploration Commons, hosted in our teaching kitchen! We will learn about edible flowers while attendees will help create one of five dishes to share among the whole group:

- Mango Smoothie Bowl with Edible Flower Garnishes

- Lemon Chia Seed Donuts with Rose Frosting

- Melon Hibiscus Sorbet

While we eat, librarians Hannah and Joy will book talk a variety of narrative nonfiction nature-focused books that will be available for checkout at the end of class.
