RE: 24" X 24" X 24" MARINELAND CUBE ON A MARINELAND MONTEREY RED OAK STAND

Hello Again To All at SimplyDiscus

I have been absent from SimplyDiscus, the Community, and the Forum for awhile now.
I needed to take some time to gather my thoughts and to formulate another plan to re-enter the hobby after a 40 year absence.
I welcome, and anxiously await, any and all feedback from each and every one of you in the Community at SimplyDiscus.

Throughout the Fall of 2009 and into the Winter of 2010 (culminating with a personal visit to Al Sabetta's home and his Discus hatchery (CT Discus) with tank after tank of absolutely stunning & breathtaking Discus) I spent 100's of hours reading and studying all the books on Discus that I had bought, and on SimplyDiscus Forum.
I had completed the construction phase of my "Discus Journey" by having all 2 x 12's in the lower level of my home doubled up, bolted together, and then reinforced with a 6 foot long by 6 inch thick steel "I" beam held up in place by 5 inch steel lolli columns.
I had originally planned a 150 gallon setup in a corner of my living room, then changed my mind and decided to put a 220 gallon on a 12 foot wall on the other side of the Living Room.
I never got past the construction...............
I HAD TOO MANY TECHNICAL QUESTIONS IN REGARDS TO FILTRATION, LIGHTING, WATER QUALITY, WATER CHANGES (AND THE LIST GOES ON AND ON AND ON).
I WANTED MY "DISCUS JOURNEY" TO BE SO PERFECT THAT I NEVER GOT PAST THE CONSTRUCTION PHASE.
I WAS SIMPLY OVERWHELMED AND OVERLOADED WITH DIFFERING INFORMATION FROM SO MANY DIFFERENT SOURCES !!!!!
AND THEN, AS TIME PASSED I WASN'T CERTAIN IF I WANTED TO MAKE SUCH A HUGE COMMITMENT TO THE HOBBY WITHOUT FIRST EXPERIENCING AND ABSOLUTELY LOVING "THE ART AND THE SCIENCE OF DISCUS HUSBANDRY", SO, I PUT THE PROJECT ON HOLD INDEFINATELY !!!!! (UNTIL RECENTLY WHEN MY PASSION FOR DISCUS REIGNITED – I JUST CAN’T GET THEM OUT OF MY MIND.)
The one thing that never changed was that I was hopelessly addicted to Discus and the images that were etched in my mind from my visit to Al's house and hatchery.
His collection remains a picture in my mind.
I am intimidated by Discus, yet totally enamored.
Well, I'm back with what I feel is a more practical approach, one which I feel more comfortable with and less overwhelmed by, which is to try Discus keeping on a smaller scale to become comfortable and familiar with the variables before plunging into the larger automated Discus setup.
Getting my feet wet (excuse the pun) first.
So, with all that being said here is what I am thinking.......
I have a perfect place in the Master Bedroom for a 60 gallon 24" x 24" x 24" Marineland cube on a Monterey Red Oak stand with a Marineland Marine PRO lighting fixture for a lightly planted, most likely biotope with sand and driftwood and Amazon swords, Discus only tank.
You can see this setup in the Foster and Smith Aquatics catalog or the link below

I love the idea of laying in bed, watching TV with my Golden Retriever, Kobe, and being able to glance over and see my Discus tank.
Will this tank work with Discus ?????????
Can I be successful with this setup ???????
How many 2-3 inch juvies will I be able to put in this tank ????????
I anxiously await all the feedback from the Community. The input from each and every one of your responses will help me to get this "Discus Journey" finally off the ground.
    Thanks
    Steve

    Hello Steve,
Honestly to me it sounds to me like you've done a lot of research and I personally think you are freakin yourself out. If you keep up on water changes and keeping the tank clean you'll be fine. Usually water quality is the cause to most problems. That tank imo would probably only be good for 3 or 4 fish... I def think you can be successful with that set up if you can put some time into the maintenance once a week. Good luck and hopefully soon we will see some pics of a tank with some good lookin fish.

For a set up like that, you will be better off with a mated pair of adult discus.

I agree with the mated pair. Its just not a lot of swimming room in that type of tank.
