IT'S NUCLEAR!
SA Teaching-Artist, Nolan Kennedy partnered with 9th-grade science teachers to create a curriculum-aligned residency project exploring nuclear energy and the climate crisis. Students designed a series of games which audience members can try at the May 16 event. Bring a phone to scan QR codes and put it away to play a variety of trivia games that will have you alternately laughing and head scratching. Student and SA performances will pepper the event.

IMMIGRANT YOUTH - TEEN MENTAL HEALTH 1 ACTS
9th-grade students have been paired with a Strike Anywhere playwright for a playwriting residency exploring teen mental health. Students at the International HS for Health Sciences are all recent immigrants, having immigrated to the U.S. within the past 4 years. SA has worked on language acquisition and communication skills through applied theater with various grade levels and has provided professional development to educators at the school since 2017.

SAY IT FORWARD
A racial equity and community building initiative is underway with Fort Greene Preparatory Academy (FGPA) in Brooklyn, featuring an 8-session pilot residency series integrated into 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade social studies. Students engage in workshops exploring race, gender, identity, power dynamics, and equity through creative writing and storytelling. Culminating performances take place in FGPA's auditorium. This project is supported by a grant from the NYC DOE Office of Arts and Special Projects and prioritizes English Language Learners and Students with Disabilities.

Students Bring History Into Present Day
Strike Anywhere has been a trusted arts partner at FGPA since 2016. This year, students schoolwide worked with a Strike Anywhere teaching-artist to bring history to life. Students researched historical figures and wrote monologues from their point of view. They then worked with a professional SA actor to learn how to step into the shoes of the character and connect with an audience. The residency culminates in both an in-class presentation for every student in the school and a performance in the auditorium of a select set of characters who are accompanied by SA's professional musicians. The residency has been supported by the Department of Education's Office of Arts and Special Projects.

PLIABLE FUTURES
Experience a dynamic fusion of jazz, dance, and theater addressing the global plastic crisis in this unique, durational, site-specific performance. Strike Anywhere’s talented ensemble of jazz musicians, dancers, and actors will lead audiences through the park using Soundpainting—a live composing sign language—to guide their improvisations in real-time. The ensemble will weave music, movement, and narrative into a captivating exploration of our world's plastic plight. This performance deftly employs creativity and humor to spark dialogue about an urgent environmental issue.

3 SA MEMBERS HEADED TO SOUNDPAINTING THINKTANK IN SPAIN
Strike Anywhere's Artistic Director, Leese Walker plus dancer, Vimal Pradeep and Musical Director, Rolf Sturm, will convene with other renowned Soundpainters from around the world for a weeklong residency with Soundpainting's inventor, Walter Thompson. This year's Soundpainting Thinktank will take place in Lleida, Spain and will honor the 50th Anniversary of the Soundpainting Language for Live Composition.
The group will explore new applications of the universal sign language for live composition, will share work in various artistic disciplines, and will codify new language!

| This community focused bike ride with a series of POP UP arts activations will celebrate Broadway in V Acts as a thriving greenspace, expanding public space, and center of community. We will be celebrating Broadway’s culture, art, and thriving creative theater scene. Beginning at Columbus Square, this musical and colorful ride will highlight Broadway’s parks and plaza through sound and performance, with a stop at various locations for pop-up performances with local artists, continuing to Union Square for the final picnic.

SA's ARTISTIC DIRECTOR LEESE WALKER TO TEACH FOR 12TH YEAR AT T.T.I.
THEATRICAL TEACHING INSTITUTE (T.T.I.) is a six-day opportunity for educators and teaching artists to add to their toolkit of teaching strategies and to stimulate their own intellect and creativity by exploring Roundabout's Theatrical Teaching Framework, which posits that every great lesson has the elements of a great play.
The workshop is co-facilitated and co-designed by Leese Walker, Strike Anywhere's Artistic Director. The hands-on seminar provides teachers and teaching-artists with experiential techniques to enliven their classrooms. Participants will delve into devising original artwork with Walker each afternoon and will be treated to a Broadway ticket to a current production which will be referenced during the course. TA's and teachers can expect to walk away from the week reinvigorated and newly inspired to bring their classroom curriculum to life by applying the theatrical teaching methods they learn over the course of the week.

| This weeklong residency is part of a larger project called "Tune on the Distant Hill". Strike Anywhere has been commissioned by the Chandler Center for the Arts to create a Soundpainted performance with the local community. The dynamic project embodies a vision of community-centered art as a catalyst for social transformation and collective empowerment. Join Strike Anywhere for a series of Story Circle, Devising and Soundpainting workshops. Participants can expect to share personal stories, create music, movement and scenes based on the stories and to learn how to Soundpaint. Material from the workshops will be developed into "palettes" by Strike Anywhere's permanent ensemble of performers. The full ensemble returns in September to work with local performers and to create a Soundpainted concert that celebrates the unique identity of Randolph while addressing pressing social justice issues that affect its residents and those of Central Vermonters. |
SUMMER RETREAT
The SA Ensemble will be taking its annual retreat in the Catskills to devise a new performance for the Randolph Vermont community. "Tune on the Distant Hill" is a soundpainted concert devised with and for central Vermonters. The company will also take time to bond over s'mores, swimming and lawn games!

SOUNDPAINTING RESIDENCY IN RANDOLPH, VT
This final weeklong residency will allow the Strike Anywhere Performance Ensemble to collaborate with an ensemble of local artists to cement their understanding of Soundpainting and put the show together.
"Tune on the Distant Hill" serves as a catalyst for meaningful dialogue within the community, providing a platform for diverse voices to be heard and respected. By amplifying underheard stories and perspectives, the production fosters empathy, understanding, and solidarity among community members. Through powerful performances and authentic storytelling, the project raises awareness of the social justice issues explored, shedding light on systemic injustices and inspiring action for positive change. Community members and audiences alike are encouraged to confront uncomfortable truths and engage in critical conversations about equity, justice, and inclusivity. By empowering community members to actively participate in the artistic process and advocating for social justice through their performances, "Tune on the Distant Hill" has the potential to catalyze tangible change within the community. Whether through policy advocacy, grassroots activism, or collective mobilization, the project empowers participants to become agents of change in their own communities.

| Established in 1997, the Strike Anywhere Performance Ensemble (SA) is an interdisciplinary collective of world-class improvising jazz musicians, dancers, and actors in NYC, working at the crossroads of activism, arts, and social justice. The company applies structures and concepts from American jazz and Soundpainting, a universal sign language developed by composer Walter Thompson, to create live compositions with improvisers. SA has performed and taught in over 200 venues in 16 states and eight countries. |
TUNE ON THE DISTANT HILL
"Tune on the Distant Hill" is a a bespoke, community-devised performance commissioned by the Chandler Center for the Arts with and for the Randolph, Vt community. Performers from Strike Anywhere will perform a residency to collectively devise the piece with community members. The performance will then be performed by local residents alongside Strike Anywhere’s professional ensemble of jazz musicians, dancers and actors. The performance will be Soundpainted.

| Soundpainting is the universal sign language for live composition with improvisers. A conductor signs to the ensemble - offering parameters within which to improvise. The performers respond by improvising according to the signed gestures. The technique is employed in over 33 countries worldwide. Strike Anywhere is the preeminent ensemble in the United States practicing the performance technique.
The performance will be followed by a post-show facilitated dialogue, allowing audience members to engage in meaningful conversations on topics raised by the performance. Ways to get engaged in local efforts will be on hand for audience members who feel so inclined. |
