Like many, I gravitated toward nostalgia viewing in 2020, and I haven’t clawed my way back out. The overarching mythology of “The X-Files” helped usher in our present era of Serious TV, but few modern dramas even try to bring the humor and silliness of a good monster-of-the-week episode. I recently finished my third rewatch, and I regret nothing.
I remember seeing this behemoth on display shelves around 2000. It had the look of something I’d buy, ambitiously, and never finish. But living in London, I’ve been chipping away at the 32-hour audio version, wandering the same ancient streets whose history the writer Peter Ackroyd and the narrator Nigel Patterson bring to life.
I resisted this one for a while! It felt too much like the rabbit holes I spend time poking around during my workday. But Naomi Klein explains so much about what makes our digital world — our actual world — so baffling. She’s a readable, organized and clear guide, all the more necessary when the topic is none of those things.
During an off week for my other favorite movie podcast, “You Are Good,” I dove into this show, starting with the three-part “Lord of the Rings” series and becoming fully hooked by the “Galaxy Quest” episode. Despite the critical title, these are movie-industry people who really, truly love films, and the people who make them.
I’ll admit to never thinking much about what happens to costumes after a movie production wraps up. But now of course it makes sense that a fancy period dress or an alien commander’s spacesuit wouldn’t just get one turn onscreen. This account has a companion website, but I prefer getting my dose of corsets and couture on Instagram.
