Was going to choose another restaurant and my guests wanted something simple. To my surprise the food was really good! The pulled pork sliders were delicious. The bartender was super cool and attentive. Will definitely go back

Better than expected! Well crafted burger with flavor. Fries crispy and perfect. Late late night kitchen... like 1a. Everyone else was done around 1130p. Old school bar set up that spans back pretty far. It's a sports bar for sure, wish they had more than 2 channels on the 6-8 screens. I didn't drink but friends did and pleased with the pour. I had the retro burger (no cheese) and it was so filling! Served on an English muffin. Friends had theirs on a bun then the catfish Sammy was on a baguette and the fried chicken wrap was meaty. Perfection. Again--- BETTER than you would expect.

New location on 9th ave and it's great! Currently their soft opening and the food was great! Got the wings (buffalo and sweet thai) with a side of nuclear (amazing) and ass-burner (HOOOOTTTT)! French onion soup was delish and the skirt steak was so perfectly cooked. Can't wait till the bar is in full effect!

I've lived around the corner from this place for 13 years; this is the third iteration of this restaurant that I've seen come and go and come.
The immediately previous iteration, the Distillery, tried to be a gastropub, to some early success. This one has gone the other way. Food is subpar and the menu is not aspirational. Prices are still Manhattan prices. As it is now July, I notice that the air conditioning seems to barely function.
They hang a pride flag in the window but I have a hard time thinking of another establishment in HK with such an uber-straight vibe. Baseball on the 6 big screens. Tainted Love and Wings playing on the speakers. Bad onion rings and basic b**** salads and sandwiches.
I was debating btwn trying this place and swinging by Panda Express tonight. I know which one I'll pick next time.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Feb 17, 2023
A new location for American Retro Bar and Grill has opened on 9th Avenue In Hell's Kitchen. The original one is still operating on 11th Avenue. It was later in the afternoon when I went. Too late for lunch but early for dinner. It is in the location of the restaurant that was The Distillery. It is a nice sized space with the bar on one side and tables on the opposite side. There were a few people at the bar drinking when I entered and I sat at a table. The menu has a lot to offer and the selections can be prepared in different ways. I looked over the menu and decided on the grilled chicken sandwich. I ordered water as well. I was looking at my phone and suddenly my meal appeared. The sandwich was a substantial size and came with lettuce, pickle, tomato and onion along with french fries. Several condiments were at the end of the table. The meal was delicious and I was full when I left. No need to stop anywhere else. The waitress was very accommodating and pleasant and the prices are very reasonable. I would recommend and return.

I can't express how much I love American Retro. Some of the best pub food in Manhattan with all the televised sporting events and beers on tap you could want, along with great service, a chill crowd, and reasonable prices. The kitchen is also open til 2am. It's my home away from home. Hope to see you there.

Found a blue medium length hair in my salad. Not sure I want to reorder from here again. Quality control issue.
Helpful 6Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0Apr 29, 2020Previous reviewI've ordered from here a couple more times since and the Cobb salad is good too. Ordered the burger with extra crispy fries and the chicken fingers again. I love their bleu cheese dressing. So good! Honey mustard is a pass. Chicken crispy and cooked perfect. Everything always arrives hot. It's a decent portion and I can never finish it lol. Still great the next day as leftovers.
May 9, 2019Previous reviewThis is for delivery. Delivery was quick! My order arrived early and is correct. I ordered the chicken fingers and the Retro burger (w/o mayo). Everything arrived perfectly packaged and hot. The chicken fingers were melt-in-your-mouth good! Cooked perfect and had a perfect crunch. I got them with bleu cheese. The bleu cheese was delicious!! I ordered the retro burger rare and it was cooked perfect. The fries were crispy on the outside. Burger was a little on greasy side. Def need napkins! And I loved that it came with a large pickle spear. Everything was yummy! And prices aren't bad. I'll likely try more menu items from here. :)

The food here is delicious and I want to emphasize that it's worth the extra excursion to come to the far west side for this place if you're a foodie. But if you're coming here with the intention of drinking good bourbons, you're sadly mistaken. When I asked if they had Wild Turkey 101; an *American* top shelf bourbon, I was met with raw confusion. I'm sorry but if your restaurant or bar name has the word *American* in it, you should have ALL American whiskeys and bourbons in your bar and know what it is.
Not only that but the service sucked, even with half the restaurant full. The appetizers and the main course came at the same time which is a pet peeve of mine. The waitress/bartender wasn't very welcoming at all, she was fairly cold and felt as if I asked her anything it was like it would bother her.
In contrast, I ordered the Mac N' Cheese and the steak sandwich. The Mac N' Cheese was on the higher side of average; glad to see béchamel in it, and it was very tasty. The steak in that sandwich was better than some stand alone steaks at chain and high end restaurants, well above average. The steak on that sandwich was juicy, tender, perfectly medium rate, and well seasoned with a bit of char.
The ambiance of this place is very pleasant; very welcoming and cozy, the best way to describe it is Applebees meets Irish pub but with Irish pub quality food. I cannot wait to come back to try some more things here, maybe that service problem I had was a one time deal. But it did leave a bad taste in my mouth, and will be keeping this in mind during my next visit.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Didlane P.New York, NY01Feb 28, 2023Updated review
RACIST BARTENDER and LYING OWNER.
Seemingly the bartender can't read IDs and they don't appreciate when their customers laugh or else they're playing a childish game. Horrible service as soon as we sat down and now the owner pretended to watch a "video" where nothing he stated happened. Just lies on lies and incompetent staff. Do better.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Business owner information

This did not happen.
I was here for the first 20 minutes you were here, and I watched the video of the rest.
The purpose of you coming in was to sit and chit chat while drinking water. You never intended on ordering anything.
The bartender came over to your table multiple times to see if she could get you anything, you picked up the menu and pretended you were looking... And everytime she walked away, you'd giggle to one another as if you were playing some childish game. She asked for your ID and one of you was under 21, and you STILL ASKED FOR A DRINK.
You were asked to leave (as any bartender would do at this point), and when you left, you called from outside and told the bartender you wished she were dead.
Calling someone a racist is a serious accusation. And while I tend to not to respond to reviews this damanded my attention. This girl has worked for us for a number of years and your claims are simply false.
She's not a racist, you're an asshole.Jun 11, 2022Previous reviewRACIST BARTENDER. Me and my friend went in for a cup of water and decided we were going to stay and buy something so not to be rude. We were going to buy a appetizer and a drink and she asked for our ID. We give it to her and get them back and go back to our seats. Not five minutes later after I give her my order of a tequila sunrise she asks for our IDs again. I laugh at a joke my friend makes and she glared rudely says "Is there an issue with YOU people". I tell her no and and she immediately says she will no longer serve us and shoos us away. Very rude and racist to us.

Great food, the onion wings are my favorite. Theater tots are amazing also! Only wished they were more wait staff, but you can't predict how crowded a bar will be. A great addition to HK. Heading there this evening again!!!
