“Nobody’s going to want to sit on high-speed rail for fifteen hours to get from New York City to LA.”

Me. I will sit on high-speed rail for fifteen hours. I’ll sit on it for days. I’ll write and read and nap and eat and then do it all over again. I’ll stare out the windows and see America from ground level and not have to drive. I’ll see the Rockies and the deserts and cornfields and the Mississippi River and your house and yours and yours too. I’ll make up stories in my head about the small towns I see as we go along. I’ll see the states I’ve yet to see because driving or flying there is a fucking slog and expensive to boot. I’ll enjoy the ride as much as the destination. And then I’ll do it all over again to come the fuck home.

I used to love going to San Diego for Comic Con by train. I’d start in Chicago, take a train that would take two or three days of bimbling through lower Illinois and Texas and New Mexico and I’d get to LA and then a commuter train to San Diego. I’d meet thousands of people in San Diego and then I’d get on the train in LA and go up the coast and then head East and spend another day or two decompressing until I got off in Minneapolis St Paul. It was the best time of the year. Sometimes I’d write and sometimes I’d stare out of the window.

i was talkin with some europeans about their healthcare and i realized like, even if i had the means to immigrate, i most likely would not be allowed to in most countries as a single person because I am disabled. This is another major aspect of ableism I don’t see talked about often, the way immigration systems across the globe are designed to keep disabled people (who would be ‘burdens’ on the welfare system) out.

I like the expression new-fangled. I don’t know what it means for something to be fangled, but I sure as hell know it was recent

It’s from the Old English word feng, which can mean “to take”, or also “to grasp, hold, or embrace”. So something that’s newfangled is something that was taken up recently.

The reason it’s using this pretty archaic root is that it’s an older word than a lot of people think. Here it is in the Canterbury Tales.

A photograph of a printed page with Middle English text on it. The word "newefangelnesse" is highlighted.ALT

Minutes after posting: “Why did I write archaic when I could have gone with old-fangled?”

Okay with the caveat that I have not personally verified this, but it does appear to be supported by google support threads and their abuse policy

User sloan_spencer_author on instagram reports that another author they know had their Google docs access suspended for sharing explicit content.

I know that lots of y'all on f1blr use google docs, so I’d encourage you to back up your work locally (on your hard drive/an external drive). I don’t know what a good alternative is–I’ve been using Proton Drive (since I already pay for a Proton email) and I don’t see anything in the terms of service about prohibiting explicit content, so. Maybe that and Word or OfficeLibre? Man, I don’t know. Our cyberpunk dystopia sucks.

Relevant: when I searched “Google docs ban on explicit work” I found the following link, in which the IT Director for the Tom of Finland Foundation posted about their Drive being monitored for sexually explicit material.

I am the IT Director for the Tom of Finland Foundation, a 501©3 non-profit, dedicated to protecting, preserving, and promoting the erotic arts for over three and a half decades.

We were just notified that files have been restricted on our private, access-restricted drive. They often contain nudity which is 100% consensual, completely legal, and for artistic purposes.

This was originally posted February 2, 2023.

I wish I had better advice, but… yeah. Back things up.

Like I know we all love making ADHD seem cool but like, don’t forget it’s actually a disability? My ADHD is bad enough I’ve nearly been evicted for forgetting to mail the rent check to the property manager, I’ve forgotten to pay the utility bills and had my water or power get turned off or had to pay fines bcs I missed a credit card payment. Once I was supposed to cat sit for a friend and I lost the house key she gave me but didn’t realize until she was already out of town, and she had to call the apartment office to get someone to give me the spare so her cats would have food for the week. When I’m unmedicated I can’t even get myself to shower half the time, forget eating or cleaning. Before I started living with my fiance I’d just like, not eat for days because I didn’t have anyone to remind me to eat or go buy me food. I’ve forgotten to turn the stove off so many times and ruined kettles and tbh been DAMN fucking lucky the house didn’t burn down. I’ve done stupid, impulsive shit that’s nearly gotten me KILLED. I can’t remember to close the shower curtain reliably even through my fiance points out every single time I forget, and he’s almost out of soap rn bcs for the last MONTH neither of us have been able to remember to order more once we get out of the shower.

I’ve had such bad memory my entire life that to this day someone suggesting I forgot something because I simply didn’t care enough is a legitimate trigger that, in the worst cases, makes me have a breakdown.

I get that for some of you this is just something that makes studying hard or you forget to take a pee break when you’re playing Minecraft or whatever, that’s still a valid struggle and you do deserve help and understanding, but like, ADHD is a disability. It’s disabling. It’s not impossible to improve and learn coping skills, meds help a lot, there are great accommodations out there(LIKE CLEANING SERVICES), but not every case of ADHD is the same, and a lot of them are pretty ugly ngl, and just because you managed to do something doesn’t mean someone else is gonna be able to manage it too, or that they’re being lazy for struggling. And that obviously doesn’t mean ADHD people have a free pass to never work on themselves and make everyone cater to their every need or whatever, but we do deserve some understanding when we explain that our disability is actually disabling in ways that aren’t palatable to you. So like, idk, maybe don’t immediately recoil in horror when you find out that someone with ADHD can’t keep their house clean. And for fucks sake don’t ridicule them for it.

As some people have pointed out in the tags(and I myself noticed like a day after I posted this once I’d calmed down) I know not being able to study and remember to go pee are also disabling. I wrote this post after witnessing a truly vile ammount of ableism from a group of people who were basically saying that because they don’t struggle with something despite having ADHD then clearly no one with ADHD could possibly struggle with that, and also calling the person struggling with that a lazy disgusting asshole who needs to stop being a child and get their shit together, and in my upset state I wasn’t considering how best to word my argument and tbh I also really didn’t think this post would get reblogged this much. Still, in retrospect I really would have liked to find a better way to convey what I meant, because yeah, I shouldn’t downplay how serious not remembering to go to the bathroom or being able to study are just to defend people who have serious struggles with cleaning.

i have to get this out of the way, re: dungeon meshi discussions

major spoilers ahead, obviously.

you know for a series that focuses so much on platonic and familial relationships it’s weird that dungeon meshi has attracted so much useless ship wars though. the most important driving force in the story is two sibling relationships (laios’s search for falin, thistle’s search for delgal) and one of the central themes is how loving others way too much can lead to your downfall (thistle’s desperate attempt to keep his loved ones leads to his mental state deteriorating so much he starts torturing people he claims to protect, marcille’s fear of losing her friends leads to her being easily manipulated by the main antagonist)

even with regards to falin. thistle wants to bring the ‘brother’ he raised back at all costs, he saw a young human woman as nothing more than a dragon, his tool. marcille wants to bring falin back at all costs, she didn’t care about the repercussions of using monster meat instead of animal meat even though she was an expert at ancient magic and should know why it’s such a dangerous practice.

each and every single one of the major characters has some form of tragedy with their family one way or another: the toudens, marcille and her dad. chilchuck and his wife. senshi’s entire backstory. izutsumi’s hidden desire for a mother. namari’s father. shuro and his family. kabru and his mother(both tallman and elf). mithrun and his brother. thistle and the melinis.

even some of the minor characters: flamela and her dead twin sister. the twins and the floke couple. kuro being the closest mickbell has to a family. etc etc

as someone who has reread this manga several times by now, i wonder if people just… read it once as fast as they could and act like they’re some sort of authority on fan discussion. i’ve seen people brag about reading the entire thing in one sitting as if it’s something to be proud of. this manga isn’t meant to be read that fast, that’s how you get people claiming that laios doesn’t reaaally love falin as much as marcille does.

to these people, laios just gets in the way, as if it wasn’t his idea to go down the dungeon in the first place, it wasn’t him who said his pain doesn’t matter because falin suffered more than him, it wasn’t him who felt immense guilt for leaving falin behind, it wasn’t him who found her skull, it wasn’t him who killed her to save her from her chimera form. i feel like people forget about the ‘too’ part when marcille said “i miss falin too”

marcille knows how much falin and laios love each other. that’s why she asked him if she’s allowed to resurrect her and didn’t act on her own. that’s why when both times a shapeshifting monster copied marcille to trick laios, it was what she looked like at the time she was reviving falin.

as someone who DOES ship farcille, none of the romance is canon. this isn’t meant to be anti-farcille. one of the post-canon comics is about falin gently turning down shuro because she wants to travel the world, “you can’t tie a dragon down” after all. she wants to travel the world and find herself because she doesn’t know who she is outside of marcille and laios. even marcille, who was hoping she’d reject him, tears up because of how beautiful and tragic it was.

there are a lot of ship teases because what author doesn’t like a good ship tease. but to say that dungeon meshi is a romantic love more than it is a story about family(both real and found) is a great misinterpretation of the text.
