MIT spinout Boston Metal is commercializing a new method for making steel and other metals that could clean up the highly polluting industry. “All of the fundamental studies and the initial technologies came out of MIT,” Guillaume Lambotte says.

On any given day, researchers in Robert Gilliard’s lab may be synthesizing new materials that change color in response to temperature, designing new molecules that activate chemical bonds, or making useful compounds out of carbon dioxide.

Set in various familiar MIT locations, “Hall That Never Ends” is the opening song from “Log Log Land,” a new film from the MIT Logarhythms. The film contains five original songs inspired by the Oscar Award-winning “La La Land.”

Senior Grace McMillan is pursuing a degree in 21E: Humanities and Engineering. “Engineers need communication skills. You can be the smartest person in the room, but no one will care if you can’t convey your ideas effectively," she says.

A new system can monitor harmful gases, such as nitrogen dioxide, at low cost. While typical sensors can be used only once or a few times, the new material works continuously. “You want to be able to detect and reuse,” Aristide Gumyusenge says.
