Wedding Vows ! Are these required ?

In our fellowship we make Wedding Vows at the time of wedding. We flout them very easily. Here is one vow, “We’ll start the day together & end the day together”. I think we break them unknowingly. First things first, we need to know the roles & responsibilities of a husband & wife from a Biblical point of view. These vows in our weddings have become like a “mantra” or “mantralu” or “recitations”.

We rarely hear any preacher exhorting on Wedding Vows neither are we given a soft copy of the vows we make. Agreed that Man of God, Dear Bro. Bakht Singh Chabra might have framed these prayerfully and the vows keep a wife & husband to abide by, but still why do we make some of them from the list of vows when we know that we are surely going to break some of the them.

A marriage should be based on Faith & Trust and not because we’ve made vows. Are these vows scriptural or legal? Are wedding vows necessary? Some say, how can we declare as wife & husband without vowing. I think the declaration as wife & husband is legal as per the Indian Christian Law. Ofcourse, the public declaration has a lot of meaning.

God made covenants with man, similar to vows. Amos 3:3 – Can two walk together, except they be agreed? Matt 18:19 – If two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven. Num 30:2, Deut 23:21, 23 – If you have made vows then keeps your vows, but if you havent made vows, make sure that your marriage is bound by Faith & Trust. Can these vows be edited/updated, because we are breaking some of them unknowingly and knowing that we’ll break them anyway.

Let us not think that we are questioning what man of God has appointed. Many in our fellowship who grew from the Sunday School are deep rooted in each and everything, many things we just learnt by obedience without questioning. But there are some who have just joined our fellowship and some who have questions on why we do some things. So there needs to be some discussion or clarity on these things scripturally so that we can answer them. Please add your thoughts.
