Bob Mould

Singular Artists proudly presents Bob Mould live in Button Factory, Dublin 25th November 2023. Tickets are available from www.singularartists.ie on Friday, 16th June at 10am

Today, Bob Mould announces a fall Solo Electric - tour of the United States starting on October 6 at the Atlantis in Washington, DC, and ending at the Stoughton Opera House in Stoughton, WI on October 27. Support on the tour will be the long-time bassist in Mould’s touring trio Jason Narducy.  Mould says of this run, “I'm excited to be back in the Northeast and Midwest, especially during peak fall colours. I'm happy to have Jason supporting the tour — it's been a while since we've done solo shows together. I'm nervous, too: I've got a handful of new songs to share with you!"

On August 13, Mould is set to support Patti Smith at the Stern Grove Festival, an admission-free festival in San Francisco.  "In the late 1970s, at a record store signing event in Minneapolis, Patti graciously signed my ‘Because The Night’ 45 RPM picture sleeve,” he recalls, “Decades later, I'm thrilled to be on the bill with Patti and her band in such a unique and picturesque setting."

In addition to the solo run, Mould has two previously announced band shows, featuring his trio of Narducy and drummer Jon Wurster. The first of these is at WMSE’s Backyard BBQ in Milwaukee on August 26, followed by an appearance at the Minnesota State Fair on September 2, playing on a bill with The Hold Steady, as that band celebrates its 20th anniversary. Mould comments that, "Craig Finn and Tad Kubler were part of the Disney Hall ‘See A Little Light’ tribute show in 2011. There are very few Bob Mould Band shows this year, and we're honoured to be part of the Hold Steady's 20th Anniversary celebration."

Mould continues to tour behind his box set Distortion: 1989-2019 chronicling his solo career and work in the band Sugar over 18 studio albums, 4 live albums, and 2 albums of rarities and collaborations. More info HERE

Also, it was recently announced that his first band Hüsker Dü will be releasing an album - TONITE LONGHORN, a previously-unreleased double-disc set of rare live recordings from the legendary band’s embryonic on-stage beginnings. Drawn from the historical Hüsker Dü recording archives compiled by late sound engineer Terry Katzman, the album collects 28 explosive tracks captured over four different nights between July 1979 and September 1980 at Minneapolis, MN’s notorious Longhorn Bar. TONITE LONGHORN arrives via the band’s own Reflex Records at all DSPs and streaming services on August 25, 2023. A limited edition 2xLP black vinyl release was released this past Saturday, April 22 as part of the Record Store Day celebration.

Mould says in closing, "I'm looking forward to hitting the road again this year, both Solo and with the Band, adding “2023 is shaping up to be a pleasant mix of past, present, and future."

India Martínez

FEMININITY AND TALENT

In India Martínez first it was flamenco and then came pop. She was still a girl when she won her first jondo art festivals,

to which she entered with the endorsement of her guitar and music theory studies, and she had already become quite a

girl when she opened her eyes to pop. That she took that path, and not the reverse, is one of the explanations for the

spell of her songs, which try to bring two styles so distant even generationally closer. Of course, she is not the first artist

to try it, but if India is who she is today, an authority in that fusion that is as racial as it is contemporary, it is possibly

thanks to those flamenco origins that would become the foundation of her career.

“An album literally no-one else could’ve made or even attempted to replicate. Intriguing, baffling, challenging and, ultimately, endearing.”-  PunkTastic

“…one of anti-folk’s most underappreciated artists.” Sputnik Music

Singular Artists proudly present anti-folk heroes, Crywank, live for their Irish National Tour, November 2023. Tickets are available from www.singularartists.ie on Friday, 22nd September at 9am

In spite of being self-managed and unsigned, Crywank have become one of the UK’s most renowned anti-folk acts. Releasing eight albums in fourteen years and touring relentlessly around the world.

Crywank was formed by songwriter Jay Clayton in 2009 on the same day they first picked up a guitar. Despite not knowing how to play or record properly their early music gained much more attention online than expected and became more of a serious musical endeavour.

Their breakthrough album ‘Tomorrow is Nearly Yesterday and Everyday is Stupid’ was the first album to include the other half of Crywank, Dan Watson. It quickly became a cult album for amateur musicians and fans of sad music, racking up over 100 million streams online.

Crywank announced a break-up tour around the world in 2019, which was cut short by the Covid-19 pandemic. Due to the tour being postponed Crywank never actually broke up (and seemingly never will) and are still around to celebrate the ten year anniversary of ‘Tomorrow is Nearly Yesterday…’ on this tour.

Youth Lagoon

Singular Artists proudly presents Youth Lagoon live at Button Factory, Dublin 16th November 2023.

Youth Lagoon is amidst “a striking reclamation of artistic identity” (Pitchfork). Today, the cherished project of Trevor Powers presents “Prizefighter,” the new single/video from his forthcoming album (and Youth Lagoon’s first in eight years), Heaven Is a Junkyard, out June 9th on Fat Possum, and announces a massive tour of North America. Following lead single, “Idaho Alien,” “one of Powers’ best feats of songwriting to date”(Paste), “Prizefighter” explores the bond between two brothers, leaving undefined what is fact and what is fiction. Powers explains:

4 years ago, I started writing a song about brothers. I grew up with 3 of them, so our house was doomsday but with more sugar cereal. Our love was strong and so was our barbarity. It was real joy — the kind you didn't have to look for cuz it smacked you in the face or pushed you off the bed into a file cabinet. Beyond that, we were homeschooled. 4 weirdos home all day who adored each other and hated each other and played baseball everyday in the backyard and threw rocks at each other's heads and laughed 'till we threw up. Our bond is forever. That song I started those years ago meant too much to me to finish. I was scared of it. Scared of not making it great... so I tabled it.

A couple weeks before leaving to make the record, I went through some old voice memos while watching a VHS of Drugstore Cowboy. I listened to that 30-second sketch called “Prizefighter.” It was like an angel fell from the sky to tell me how to finish it. "Don't make it great," she said. "Make it true." I finished the song in 2 days.

“Prizefighter” is accompanied by a stunning black-and-white video directed by Tyler T. Williams.

This summer, Youth Lagoon will embark on a North American tour, marking his first tour here in eight years. Powers’ tour of North America will include a performance at Pitchfork Music Festival, and include stops in New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and more. He’ll play music from his entire catalog. Full dates are listed below with artist and Spotify pre-sales beginning Wednesday, April 5th at 10am local time, and general on-sale on Friday, April 7th at 10am local time.

Real Events & Bossa FM are proud to present Gilsons at the Button Factory on Wednesday the 15th of November.

The musical trio known as Gilsons was established in 2018 and consists of Francisco, João, and José Gil. Along with incorporating elements of pop rock, samba, reggae, MPB, funk and Bahiano rhythms, it also alludes to the classic MPB music of father and grandfather Gilberto Gil. Following a strong run of releases, which featured the hits "Várias Queixas," and "Devagarinho", the band released their debut album, "Pra Gente Acordar", which was nominated last September for the Latin Grammy "Best Contemporary Pop Album in Portuguese Language”. The group has been performing at important festivals across Brazil and most recently shared Rock in Rio’s Sunset Stage with Jorge Aragão to an audience of over 100,000 spectators. Additionally, the band performed at the 2023 Lollapalooza in Brazil.

Barry Can’t Swim (SOLD OUT)

Barry Can’t Swim announces headline live show at the Button Factory on November 10th

BARRY CAN’T SWIM ANNOUNCES DEBUT ALBUM ‘WHEN WILL WE LAND?’ OUT 20TH OCTOBER ON NINJA TUNE / NEW SINGLE ‘WOMAN’ OUT NOW

Multi-faceted Scottish artist Barry Can’t Swim will release his debut album ‘When Will We Land?’ on Ninja Tune, out October 20th. His broadest and most diverse project yet, the 11-track project moves from deep house to jazz, from ambiance to the percussive charge of afrobeat. It’s all held together by his singular sense of purpose and that trademark vivacity; deftly finessed, it’s an album that works as a form of musical autobiography.

The incoming debut album is led by the new single ‘Woman’, a fantastic blend of digital production and organic musicianship. A warm bed of notes pirouettes around an emphatic vocal from Låpsley, resulting in a song that moves between the cavernous house of Moodymann, say, and the neo-psychedelic tonnes of shoegaze. “I sent it out,” he recalls, “Lapsley came back immediately with this unreal vocal. I chopped it up, re-arranged it… it’s one of those things that fell into place.”

‘Woman’ follows the emphatic success of the recent single ‘Sunsleeper’, which landed in the opening weeks of 2023. A dextrous and ambitious talent, Barry Can’t Swim embraces the energy of club music while also blending this with organic elements. “For me, I want it to have a musicality to it,” he says of his debut album. “I wanted it to have the energy of electronic music but also with a more organic live element. I feel like I’m more of a musician than anything else. I’m a producer but I like writing music on instruments.”

The Edinburgh-born musician caught attention with a series of releases in 2020, before signing to Ninja Tune imprint Technicolour for his sensational 2022 EP ‘More Content’. Billboard named him as one of their 10 Dance Artists To Watch, while single ‘Blackpool Boulevard’ was Radio 1 playlisted – veteran broadcaster Pete Tong loved it, while influential voices such as The Blessed Madonna and Annie Mac are huge fans.

Expanding on this early promise, Barry Can’t Swim doubles down for his debut album, producing a work that feels complex but intricately unified. Utilising afrobeat drum loops for the title track, he works with choral harmonies on ‘Always Get Through To You’, and samples seminal Brazilian group Trio Ternura on joyous album highlight ‘Dance Of The Crab’.

“You only get to make your debut album once,” he points out. “So I want to showcase all the elements of the things I enjoy and love in music up to this point.”

Barry Can’t Swim will also be heading out on a UK/EU live tour later this year, with stops in Dublin, Amsterdam, Berlin, Paris, Manchester, Liverpool. Bristol, London, Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Wunderhorse (SOLD OUT)

Wunderhorse returns to Dublin due to extremely high demand

28 October 2023 at Button Factory

Following a string of 4 SOLD OUT shows across Ireland, Wunderhorse returns due to high demand.

Singular Artist proudly announces his biggest Irish show to date at Button Factory, Dublin on 28 October 2023.

Jacob Slater (AKA Wunderhorse) ‘s album ‘cub’ received huge praise from media such as NME, Gigwise, DIY and many more.

17 is the oldest song here, its bittersweet melody reminiscent of Lemonheads. “I wrote that when I was forming Dead Pretties but it never really went anywhere," says Slater. “The album is sort of documenting my adolescence, that bracket of time, so I’ve got that as the earliest bookend to start that process off and Epilogue, the last track on the album was written the day before we went into the studio.”

The life lived between those two points has been a storied one and its scars are there in many of the songs here. Teal’s Lou Reed-like street hussle, the dense psychedelic fug of Poppy or Morphine’s strung-out bliss. Yet songs such as The Girl Behind The Glass’s tumbling melody show multiple perspectives and viewpoints are at work within Slater’s songs, his lyrics are far more complex and layered than first meets the eye.

By the time we reach Epilogue’s meditation on lost innocence and the slow inevitable march towards eternity it’s clear that for whatever reasons he needed to do it, Jacob Slater’s decision to step away from music and remerge afresh as Wunderhorse is a gamble that has paid off in dividends. Not only for him, but most of all for us, the listeners who get to immerse ourselves in Cub.

CUB is available on limited edition purple vinyl from indie record stores and the official store.

Foggy Notions presents

ARAB STRAP. PHILOPHOBIA UNDRESSED.

A quiet celebration of the classic album's 25th birthday.

The Button Factory, Dublin

Friday October 27th, 2023

With a new album about halfway ready for release next year, we thought we could easily ignore our second album’s 25th birthday. But we find it hard to say no to Philophobia. If our first album was a ramshackle oddity filled with in-jokes and formerly private tape moments that we never expected to bother many ears, it was Philophobia where everything started to come together, when we began to realise making music might have a future for us, and the Arab Strap sounds and themes began to take shape. If you’ve seen us playing the past few years, you’ll know we still include quite a few of its songs in our setlists. These tunes seem to have endured, and it’s probably the only album we’d ever consider performing all the way through. But, with our new forward-facing philosophy and 8th album on the way, we didn’t want to make too big a deal of it. We hummed, we hawed. Venues for a bells-and-whistles full-band Philophobia tour were on hold for a while, but those plans were abandoned because it just didn’t feel right and, as Aidan said on our last album, we don’t really give a fuck about the past. But, as we say, it’s hard to say no to Philophobia, and we couldn’t just let its 25th birthday shuffle by unmarked... so we’ve decided to celebrate it after all, but quietly. The Philophobia Undressed tour will feature the album in full, but performed by just the two of us–Malcolm & Aidan with a guitar or two, some drum machines and probably a digital Mellotron–as we sing our old songs about being young, in intimate surroundings and, in some cases, visiting towns we haven’t played in a long, long time. The tour begins in England this June, but we’ll be announcing many more dates across the UK and Europe as the year goes on, so keep your eyes peeled and follow our socials, and hopefully you can join us at one of our gentle soirées in celebration of Philophobia's quarter century. We'll probably play some new songs too.

Protomartyr Present new single/video “Elimination Dances” – watch here

Sixth album Formal Growth In The Desert due June 2nd

Protomartyr — the Detroit post-punk band composed of Joe Casey (vocals), Greg Ahee (guitar), Alex Leonard (percussion), and Scott Davidson (bass) — “are sounding as vital as ever” (Stereogum). Today, the quartet presents their new single/video, Elimination Dances,” from their anticipated forthcoming album, Formal Growth In The Desert, out June 2nd on Domino. Post-quarantine, Casey and his bandmates regrouped with a sense of uncertainty, questioning if and how to continue after the turbulence of the pandemic years. They found themselves using that ambivalence to hone a song they named after a chapter from a 1950’s teen dance manual. “Elimination Dances” refers to a game where “you get tapped out when you lose the dance,” and that felt an apt metaphor for just surviving. Life is a struggle, but “you might as well keep dancing until the tap comes,” Casey says.

Following lead single Make Way,” “a tense waltz that explodes into a boisterous anthem” (The FADER), “Elimination Dances” is presented alongside a video directed by Yoonha Park, and features dancer Kota Yamazaki. “My dad once told me ‘Life is like a roll of toilet paper. The closer it gets to the end the faster it goes,’” explains Park. “That idea along with the lyrics led to the idea of a choreographic pattern that repeats as it grows outward in an expanding spiral. The choreography repeats with each cycle but has to be danced faster and faster to keep pace with the ‘pale youth’ until eventually devolving into chaos. I recently learned that the toilet paper quote was actually by Andy Rooney.”

Samantha Fish + Jesse Dayton

The first-ever collaborative album from Samantha Fish and Jesse Dayton, Death Wish Blues is a body of work born from a shared passion for pushing the limits of blues music. As one of the most dynamic forces in the blues world today, Fish has made her name as a multi-award-winning festival headliner who captivates crowds with her explosive yet elegant guitar work, delivering an unbridled form of blues-rock that defies all genre boundaries. Dayton, meanwhile, boasts an extraordinary background that includes recording with the likes of Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings, touring as a guitarist for seminal punk band X, working with Rob Zombie on the soundtracks for his iconic horror films, and releasing a series of acclaimed solo albums. Produced by the legendary Jon Spencer of Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Death Wish Blues ultimately melds their eclectic sensibilities into a batch of songs both emotionally potent and wildly combustible.

As Fish reveals, the making of Death Wish Blues marked the culmination of a musical connection forged in her hometown of Kansas City over a decade ago. “It was always a big deal when Jesse came through town to a play a show—we first met when I was 20, and I kept up with him through the years,” Fish says of the Beaumont, Texas-bred musician. “I’d been wanting to do a collaborative project for a while and went to see Jesse perform in New Orleans, and right away I knew he was the guy. We got together and had this vision of making something of an alt-blues record, but it turned out to be so much more exciting and layered than I ever imagined.”

The follow-up to Fish and Dayton’s 2022 EP Stardust Sessions—a three-song effort featuring covers of classic tracks like Townes Van Zandt’s “I’ll Be Here In The Morning”—Death Wish Blues took shape at Applehead Recording & Production in Woodstock, a studio situated on a 17-acre farm once home to The Band’s Rick Danko. Over the course of 10 frenetic days, the two musicians joined forces with bassist Kendall Wind, keyboardist Mickey Finn, and drummer Aaron Johnston, cutting most of the album live and unleashing a bold collision of blues, soul, punk, funk, and fantastically greasy rock-and-roll. With Fish and Dayton sharing vocal and guitar duties, the sonic power of each track is exponentially magnified by Spencer’s production work, endlessly tapping into the rule-breaking ingenuity that’s made him a cult hero. “Jon’s indie-rock royalty and he’s always been ahead of the game as far as moving the blues forward,” says Dayton. “For this album we wanted to keep everything blues-based, with a lot of inspiration from people like Albert King and Magic Sam on the lead-guitar parts, but we also wanted to have fun with that and take it somewhere new and different and way outside our wheelhouse.”

One of the first songs that Fish and Dayton wrote together, the album-opening “Death Wish” immediately established the free-flowing nature of their collaboration. “Samantha sent me that melody and I went into my writing room and started coming up with some lyrics inspired by all these true-crime documentaries I’d been watching,” Dayton recalls. “It turned into a song about men taking advantage of women, and I knew that Samantha could really chew on those lyrics and sing them with a lot of attitude.” Anchored by a hot-tempered vocal performance from Fish, the result is a prime introduction to Death Wish Blues’ incendiary sound, at turns gritty, exhilarating, and indelibly hypnotic. Later, on “Riders,” Fish and Dayton offer up a ferociously groove-heavy track built on their fiery vocal back-and-forth, reaching a majestic frenzy in the song’s final moments. “‘Riders’ is about being musicians and troubadours and having one-night stands with whatever city you happen to be in,” says Fish. “Every city is personified as a love interest or partner, and in the end you just move on to whatever adventure is coming up next.”

Although Death Wish Blues serves up plenty of swagger and bravado, much of the album embodies a powerfully raw sensitivity. “As we were writing some of the love songs you hear on the record, I really had to open up my heart to Samantha to get to the core of what we wanted to express,” says Dayton. “It was good for me to allow myself to be that vulnerable, and I don’t know if it’s something I would’ve been able to do when I was younger.” On “Trauma,” Fish and Dayton spin a strangely thrilling portrait of heartbreak, taking on a furious momentum as Dayton lays his pain and frustration exquisitely bare. Building a heady tension between its slow-burning verses and hard-hitting chorus, “Settle for Less” unfolds as an achingly moving meditation on self-worth. “The sentiment of that song is that if you settle for anything short of what you deserve, that’s exactly what you’re going to get,” says Fish, who co-wrote the track with her frequent collaborator Jim McCormick (Tim McGraw, Trisha Yearwood). And on “No Apology,” Death Wish Blues slips into a moment of heavy-hearted outpouring, with Fish’s graceful yet gut-punching vocals riding the line between tender longing and unapologetic self-possession. “‘No Apology’ is about fighting with the one you love and wanting to push through and make everything okay again,” says Fish. “It’s a love song but sort of twisted, because that’s the only kind of love song I write.”

Another irresistibly soulful track, “You Know My Heart” closes out Death Wish Blues with a spellbinding duet illuminating the pure magic of their musical chemistry. “That’s the first song that Jesse and I finished together,” Fish points out. “He sent it to me to one morning and told me he’d woken up the night before with that melody in his head, and we started singing it together and fleshing out the verses. It turned into a song about being far from your loved one and maybe things aren’t going the way you want, but you know they’ll love you through your worst and see your better intentions through it all. I thought that was a really beautiful way to end the record.”

Throughout Death Wish Blues, Fish and Dayton let their more lighthearted side shine on tracks like “Supadupabad,” a gloriously carefree piece of blues-funk complete with references to sipping Courvoisier from crystal cups. “That song was way out of my comfort zone, but it felt good to get sort of silly and just have fun with it,” says Fish. “It’s like a two-minute party, and I don’t think I could’ve ever come up with something like that on my own.” Thanks in part to Spencer’s direction, the recording sessions for Death Wish Blues also included such unexpected moments as building the off-kilter beat of “Dangerous People” by banging on beer cans gathered from the backyard. “What I loved about working with Jon is that we brought in a bunch of songs that we’d demoed on acoustic guitar, and he’d go in and find a way to add all these unique parts that I never would’ve envisioned,” says Fish. “Sometimes it was jarring at first, but everything ended up fitting so perfectly.” Looking back on the album-making process, Fish also notes that Spencer helped to uncover certain facets of her voice that she’d never explored before. “Jon records vocals with character; it’s about attitude rather than perfection,” she says. “I learned a lot about taking on the character of the song, and about singing with different inflections to really get the emotion across.”

For both Fish and Dayton, the making of Death Wish Blues helped fulfill their longtime mission of opening up the blues genre to entirely new audiences. “I’ve played all kinds of music in my life, punk and country and Americana and so much else, and for me this was another wonderful rabbit hole to fall down,” says Dayton. “I love that it’s coming at a moment when we’re starting to see the resurgence of rock guitar for the first time in a long time, and I think it’s going to turn a lot of people on to a kind of music they’ve never experienced before.” Fish adds: “The main reason why I make music has always been the connection it creates with others. It’s a way to communicate with the world around me, to tell stories that people can then take and apply to their own lives and maybe feel more understood. We had such a fun time making this album, and I hope that it leaves everyone with the same feeling of joy that we all felt in the studio.”

Sprints (SOLD OUT)

Singular Artists proudly presents Sprints live at Button Factory, Dublin - 6th October 2023.

Tickets are available from www.singularartists.ie on 9th June at 10am

“On course towards future raucous, beer-soaked headline festival sets.” NME

“Screw-you power relentless motorik rhythms and impressively large choruses.” Guardian

"The Dublin gang neatly package existential panic into a buzzy, punchy musical box” DIY

Sprints today share new single Adore Adore Adore, out now on City Slang. The band also confirm details of their biggest headline shows to date, including an Autumn show at London's Scala. Sprints are set to dominate the festival landscape this Summer, bringing their own brand of charisma-laden punk to stages around Europe. Despite being pre-debut album, Sprints have received a wealth of press support (The Guardian, Dork, DIY, NME, Loud & Quiet, Clash, Gigwise and others). They've also won an abundance of support at Radio 1 and BBC 6Music as well as earning a reputation as one of the most incisive and exciting live bands around. Adore Adore Adore finds Karla Chubb reflecting on her experience as the frontperson of Sprints; a woman fronting a punk band being held to patriarchal standards of acceptability.

On the new single, Karla Chubb, Sprints' lead vocalist, says

"There is still a different standard of behaviour expected from me vs even the other members in Sprints. There is a different set of invisible rules I am supposed to abide by - I am supposed to fit their mould and give them what they want - and not deliver what it is I am here to do.

So at a time when trans rights are under attack, people are trying to force upon us what they think a woman is or should be, this is the outward expression of my own frustration, struggle and rage."

Formed in 2019 when Karla, guitarist Colm O’Reilly and drummer Jack Callan - already playing together under a slowly-dwindling former guise - had the lightbulb moment at a Savages gig that they too could play the music they actually listened to and loved, Sprints have barely paused for breath since. Recruiting bassist Sam McCann, for their first show back in February of that year, the difference from day one was tangible. “Our only ethos in music is to write something that matters and that means something,” says Karla. “It’s all about expressing our identities, and injecting our personalities into it.”
