PRICE, THE DAKAR LEGEND

Team Australia, comprised of 36-year-old Toby Price of Australia and 44-year-old Paul Weel of Australia, is a serious contender in SCORE Trophy Truck, coming within 15 miles of winning the 37th edition of the King Shocks SCORE San Felipe 250 in March, but a mechanical problem in their No. 46 AWD Chevy Silverado, built by Mason Motorsports, which cost them a very painful retirement in the season-opener.

Price, overall motorcycle winner of the Dakar Rally in 2016 and 2019 with the prestigious KTM brand, splits his schedule around the world, now in SCORE, with which he will try to give his country and team a historic success in the SCORE Trophy Truck, something that has never happened in the marquee racing division that has been dominated by drivers from the United States for 30 years.

HONDA, THE JAPANESE GIANT

The official Honda Off Road Racing team will be making its 2024 debut in the SCORE Desert Championship. Their plans have them in this month’s BFGoodrich Tires 56th SCORE Baja 500 and the BFGoodrich Tires 57th SCORE Baja 1000 in November.

For this year’s SCORE Baja 500, Honda will have two vehicles, the No. 9 TSCO Honda Ridgeline in SCORE Trophy Truck, driven by 17-year-old Ethan Ebert of Marana, Arizona, and 18-year-old Michael McFayden of Redlands, California, who will be driving a new Honda Talon 2p in the Pro UTV NA class.

Ebert achieved a very good finish in the last SCORE Baja 1000, placing 11th in SCORE Trophy Truck along with Richard Glasczak, 48, of Oceanside, Calif., and Chip Prescott, 59, of Fallbrook, Calif., by covering the 1310.94-mile route between La Paz, Baja California Sur and Ensenada, Baja California in 28 hours, 54 minutes and 11 seconds.

McFayden won that SCORE Baja 1000 as part of 40-year-old Jason Murray's team from North Tustin, Calif., in the Pro UTV FI class aboard a Can-Am X3. This year, McFayden is now part of Honda Racing, the winningest motorcycle brand in SCORE history.

AN EVENT OF INTERNATIONAL STATURE

Race festivities in Ensenada will be held May 29 to June 2 for the second round of the 2024 SCORE World Desert Championship.

A NEW COMPLEX SHOWCASES A PASSION FOR COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY

By Dan Sanchez

After starting out in a small garage, Rugged Radios founder and president Greg Cottrell grew his radio and communication equipment business into a giant in the industry. We recently visited the company’s latest complex in Arroyo Grande, California, a small town neighboring Pismo Beach, which showcases the company’s passion for communication technology as well as vintage cars, motorcycles, race vehicles, and more.

“Our home is here in Arroyo Grande,” said Cottrell. “My dad had a motorcycle repair shop in Covina, California, and I began getting involved in it with him when he began racing in SCORE in the 70s.” Cottrell learned early on that communication is critical for safety during racing or other off-road adventures. Cottrell later moved to Arroyo Grande and began working on improving the communication systems that were available at the time, and he soon became a leader in the marketplace.

“I’ve been in the business of communication technology for 32 years and started Rugged Radios over 18 years ago,” said Cottrell. “I started out in my garage, and now we have a state-of-the-art complex designed by enthusiasts for enthusiasts.”

The Rugged Radios facility isn’t just a large, bland building in the middle of town. The beautiful exterior and interior are inviting to everyone interested in cars, motorcycles, off-road, Overlanding, and anything else on two or four wheels. “For us, it’s all about energy,” said Cottrell. “When you walk in, you feel the company– who we are– become immersed in the activity here, and you begin to realize you’re in the communications superstore.”

With more than 50 employees, the showroom is open and allows customers to see everything from order-taking, R&D, production, shipping, and more. You will also be surrounded by multiple vintage motorcycles, buggies, race vehicles, and hot-rods, all on display with the company’s products in them. From headsets for helmets to the latest GMRS communication units, samples are available for customers to pick up, feel, and ask questions.

The employees also show pride in working there, and although the main building and showroom are impressive, there’s much more to the Rugged Radios complex. Alongside the main building is the company’s new taco stand, a small building with a full kitchen that is still being prepared to make, sell, and distribute Baja-style tacos.

“The taco stand is being set up for when we have events such as car shows here at Rugged,” said Steve Gonzalez, Rugged warehouse manager. “We have events here that bring in hundreds of vehicles, and people want to eat, so we took our love of tacos from Baja and brought it to our facility.”

The Rugged complex also houses the company’s “garage,” where new products are prototyped and tested and where team members can work on their vehicles. Everything from welding tools to a CNC laser cutter is in this area to maximize creativity and design. Behind the Garage is another building where all of Cottrell’s personal toys are housed and showcased. Vintage motorcycles, Baja Bugs, Jeeps, a vintage trailer, collectible bicycles, and a replica of his dad’s motorcycle repair shop are all displayed in a tribute to the passions Cottrell shares.

Between the main building and the Garage are numerous Rugged Radio vehicles, including show support and product trailers, along with four-wheel show and pre-runner trucks.

“This year, we partnered with SCORE International as the Official Radio Communications company,” said Cottrell. “It’s been a dream of mine to become involved with SCORE in an official capacity, as we support SCORE and SCORE supports us. Most importantly, we support the racers at every event and teach them how to install, check, and recheck their equipment before a race. This partnership with SCORE is only the beginning, and I can’t wait for the many more years to come.”

ENSENADA, Baja California, Mexico—Mexico’s Vildósola surname is synonymous with respect, championships, and victories in SCORE Baja desert racing. Obviously, they are the great favorites of Mexican fans in the 2024 SCORE Desert World Championship.

From Mexicali, Baja California, Gustavo Vildósola Sr, 70, and his son Gustavo ‘Tavo’ Vildósola Jr, 42, are ready to challenge the field in separate classes in the upcoming BFGoodrich Tires 56th SCORE Baja 500 in Ensenada, Baja California.

THE LATEST

From May 29 -June 2, the Round 2 of the four-race 2024 SCORE World Desert Championship, will be held, with the nearly 260 entries. To date, racers entered to make the trip to Mexican soil come from 23 U.S. States, host country Mexico, Argentina, Australia, Canada, Chile, Ecuador, Indonesia, Japan, and New Zealand.

VILDSOLA RULES

Less than a year ago, Gustavo Vildósola Sr. won the SCORE Baja 500 alongside 59-year-old Supercross legend Ricky Johnson, El Cajon, California, in the SCORE TT Legend class, covering the 473.67-mile course in 9 hours, 56 minutes and 25 seconds in his Vildósola Racing team's AWD No. 1L Ford Raptor built by SoCal’s Mason Motorsports.

This past March, the Vildósola Racing team triumphed in the 37th edition of the King Shocks SCORE San Felipe 250 in the SCORE TT Legend class, completing the 285.69-mile route in 4 hours, 34 minutes and 59 seconds to start their season in the best possible way.

That's nine class wins in a row for Vildósola Sr and Johnson in the 50-and-older category in SCORE TT Legend, regardless of the age of the navigator, with a couple of championships under their belt and dominating at will in the deserts of Baja California and Baja California Sur.

And Gustavo "Tavo" Vildósola Jr comes from a great third-place SCORE Trophy Truck finish in the King Shocks 37th SCORE San Felipe 250, so now his mind is focused on returning to the top of the SCORE Baja 500, something that has not happened since 2016.

In the 2023 SCORE Baja 500, ‘Tavo’ Vildósola finished outside the top 10 in "The Monsters of the Desert", finishing 12th, after crossing the finish line in his Ford Raptor. Vildósola Jr, a racer who has competed in such categories as Class 1/2-1600, SCORE Lites and Protrucks, learning many of the secrets to succeed in Baja from his father Gustavo Vildósola, Arturo Honold, Roberto Romo Señor and Rob MacCachren.

On Saturday, June 1, the Vildósola Racing team will seek to win the BFGoodrich Tires 56th SCORE Baja 500 in both the SCORE Trophy Truck and SCORE TT Legend classes, with Gustavo ‘Tavo’ Vildósola Jr, Gustavo Vildósola Sr and Ricky Johnson, in order to celebrate in Ensenada with their multitude of Mexican fans.

Overall, Vildosola Sr also has three career SCORE Trophy Truck class wins along with his three season point titles in the seven-year history of the SCORE TT Legend class.

Vildosola Jr has seven career SCORE Trophy Truck class wins including his victory in the 2016 race.

BFGoodrich Tires Introduces New All-Terrain T/A KO3

by Dan Sanchez

BFGoodrich Tires introduced its next evolution of its Terrain Family of tires, the new All-Terrain T/A KO3. According to the company, the new KO3 tire was built from the performance of the company's All-Terrain T/A KO2 tire and features the latest tire technologies with stronger performance and benefits.

“BFGoodrich Tires’ legendary toughness has been made tougher with the creation of the All-Terrain KO3 tire,” said Harold Phillips, BFGoodrich Global General Manager. “We’ve done a lot of racing and research in the 10 years since we launched the KO2 tire, so a decade of data, feedback, technology, and experience went into developing the KO3 tire. We are our own competition, and we knew it was time to take the all-terrain tire to another level. It will be exciting to see what consumers will do – at work and play – with the KO3 tire.”

The All-Terrain T/A KO3 tire has increased wear performance, greater gravel road durability, and improved snow traction while maintaining the sidewall toughness and soft soil traction of the KO2 tire.

The new tread compound is designed with an optimized footprint and full-depth 3D locking sipes for even wear and greater durability and longevity, even on gravel. The company's CoreGard Technology gives the KO3 tire excellent sidewall toughness, which earned it the Baja Champion badge. The Advanced Deflection Design helps prevent objects from snagging and splitting the sidewall.

Off-road traction is improved with a serrated shoulder design and Mud-Phobic Bars for better grip in mud and snow, earning the Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake severe-snow rating on this tire.

BFGoodrich will introduce more than 100 sizes over 24 months, starting with 13 sizes available in May.
